Fantastical Beings | Graphic Narrative

Fantastical Beings is a graphic adaptation of the paper, ‘Why Mammals are called Mammals? Gender Politics in Eighteenth Century Natural History’ by Dr. Londa Schiebinger. It talks about how the classification of mammals and inclusion of humans in the class is influenced by the cultural view of breasts, women and animals. As shared by Dr. Schiebinger, the term still exists Post-Darwinian Revolution.

This project was made possible with the support of the British Council through the Creating Heroines Grant.

Moodboarding

Reading the essay and developing the story structure inspired deeply the need to use historical visuals but with a twist such as to provoke mood and questions that we want in our audience's minds. We decided to use drawings, paintings, photographs from across time and play with effects, colour tones and composition to develop a collage and zine-like comic.
Initial testing for visual language.
Collage is one of my favourite mediums to work in. It is incredibly freeing despite or possibly because I have to let go and allow images to serendipitously come together. My skills of form, composition and color are kept sharp through this process.

Wellcome collection's incredible catalogue of open source images has been the backbone of this project. The nature of these images guided my approach to the collage.
